32 x 22 inches: Marble and Mexican Smalti

The top few bars are the opening to the Beatles “Give Peace a Chance;” the middle is Gregorian Chant from the Mass of the Dead, the “Dies Ire, Dies Irae.” (Day of Wrath and Doom Impending); the third section is the first bars from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, frequently associated with movies about WWII; and the last musical phrase is then ending of the Beatles’ “Give Peace a Chance.”
You can see in the background at the top, in the marble, the words “All we are ..” and, at the end, the word “Peace.” The words are hidden in the background. They become visible upon looking more closely at the mosaic.

Ceramic and porcelain tile with dychroic glass and glow-in-the-dark grout behind the mushroom cloud. In 1947 the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (from the Manhattan Project) featured the Doomsday Clock at eight minutes to midnight, representing a countdown to possible global catastrophe due to nuclear war or, since 2007, climate change.  The January 2015 Bulletin reset the clock to 3 minutes to midnight. California, symbolized by the three roses, is on a motif from the Palestinian scarf. $550.00

In the Israeli-Palestinian conflict violence on both sides harms the innocent. The Rose of Sharon, here disintegrating, symbolizes Israel as it bleeds onto a Palestinian scarf, which is torn and burned. Italian hand made glass smalti with 24 karat gold tesserae.

A comment on how women will endure pain to enhance appearance. From the original Grimm's Fairy Tales in which the older sister cut off her heel in order to fit into the glass slipper. The glass slipper in this mosaic is in high relief.
